Aside from water (and possibly almond milk), coffee and smoothies are two of the beverages that I consume more often than anything else. I am most definitely one of those people that doesn’t feel truly awake until I’ve had my morning cup of coffee. I also can’t drink coffee before my morning workout (that would not sit well on my stomach while teaching Spinning class!) but immediately want a cup when I’m home from the gym. However, I also like to have a smoothie right after a workout. This is the dilemma that I often face: should I make a cup or coffee or make a smoothie? As you may already know, I love smoothies…
I’ve attempted to make my own version of a coffee smoothie many times- whether it’s from using cold coffee, coffee frozen into ice cubes or adding instant coffee to the mix. Some of my attempts have turned out to be okay- but none have really blown me away. When I was presented with the opportunity to review JAVAPRO through my ambassadorship with Fitfluential, I felt like someone had been reading my mind! I’m a fan of coffee flavored anything and thought that a whey protein powder that has coffee in it might be just what I’ve been looking for!
I had actually been noticing the bags of JAVAPRO at my gym for a few weeks – the packaging is certainly eye-catching and separates itself from the standard tub of protein powder I’m used to buying.
JAVAPRO comes in six delicious flavors: latte, caramel, hazelnut, french vanilla, espresso and mocha. Each serving contains 20 grams of protein (from a whey protein blend), 80 mg of caffeine and is low in sugar (and carbs). And perhaps the most important thing is the taste- which is rich and delicious!
I was bag of the mocha flavor to try- which probably wouldn’t have been my first choice (that would be caramel)- but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it! It’s delicious when blended with milk and ice- but my favorite combination also includes a spoonful of peanut butter.
Greg and I have been making smoothies with JAVAPRO to take with us on the road on our way to hit the slopes in the morning. The combination of the whey protein, peanut butter and caffeine has real staying power and is the perfect boost of energy that actually lasts. Now I can have my coffee- and drink it too!
I also used JAVAPRO as an ingredient in some energy bites (balls) that are perfect to eat before my morning workout or as a little mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
These are quick and easy to make, and only contain a few ingredients!
Mocha Peanut Butter (Pick-me-up) Bites
1/2 ripe banana
1 T creamy peanut butter
1 scoop JAVAPRO
1/4 c. peanut flour (or PB2)
2 T raw oats
(optional) 2 T shredded coconut
In a bowl, mash together the raw banana and peanut butter. Slowly add in JAVAPRO and stir well. Slowly add in peanut flour- 1 T at a time, and stir well. Add in oats and coconut until everything is mixed together well. The mixture should be thick and sticky. Scoop out a spoonful of the mixture at a time and roll into ball. Place on a sheet of wax paper. Repeat until all of the mixture is rolled up into balls. If desired, roll each ball into peanut flour to coat the outside. Store in the freezer in an air-tight container. (Let balls remain in freezer for at least 4 hours before eating.)
