The Shamrock Shake [with 550 Fewer Calories]

Happy Monday and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today’s holiday used to be a pretty big deal- mostly back in college where it was just an excuse to drink a lot of Guinness and wear silly green accessories. I do have a little bit of Irish in my blood, but honestly, St. Patrick’s Day is just another day to me. That being said, I like any excuse to drink stout, make corned beef and cabbage and eat and drink all things green. :)

One green thing that I enjoy year-round is this very delicious smoothie. It’s one of the most popular recipes (maybe even the most popular) on my blog, so I figured that it was worth sharing again. I initially created it near St. Patrick’s Day last year and enjoy it during spring, summer winter and fall. Who says you can’t enjoy a minty-vanilla, super-thick, delicious (and surprisingly healthy) shake all year long?

shamrock

This smoothie was modeled after the famed McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. I’ve never actually tried the McDonald’s version- and I’m sure it’s delicious- but I don’t know if that’s exactly what I want to spend almost 700 calories on. (And if Shamrock Shakes are your thing- more power to you!) I do have to say, and am being completely honest here, that my version is incredibly delicious and it’s almost hard to believe that it’s just 130 calories.

You can find the original recipe here.

Have a great St. Patrick’s Day!

Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? If so, what are your favorite traditions?

YUM! A must try. I’m sure I’ve had the shamrock shake before but I can’t remember what it tastes like. I had a friend in college who was OBSESSED with it (and shes one of the healthiest people I know). She’d wait all year for it to come around and then she’d have 1 or 2 small ones while they were available

Yummm! I’m a huge fan of the original shamrock shake, but sadly have to stay away now…not enough insulin in the world to make that ok with my body!!

  5. I’m going to be a few days late trying this, but it looks DELICIOUS! Excited to try :)
