You may not know this- but I actually have two art degrees. One is a Bachelors in Visual Arts (concentrating on Graphic Design) and the other is a Masters in Art Education. Do I use either of those degrees for my current job? No. Will I be paying off student loans for the rest of my life for two degrees that I don’t use? Yes.
I try to always remind myself that everything happens for a reason, and I had to experience being in a career that I didn’t love to find my true passion. Plus- my college years were awesome and I have a lot of great memories from the Fine Arts program at UMBC.
I got to put my artistic skills to use (sort of) the other night at Teller Street Gallery. My good friend Heather had purchased a Groupon for a Painting & Vino class months ago and asked me if I wanted to come with her (to which I said YES!) and we finally chose our class.
Heather had been to several of these types of classes when she lived in Atlanta, but this was a first for me! Basically the deal is that you learn how to recreate a painting while sipping wine. I actually only had a few sips of wine and focused more on the painting and girl talk with Heather.
This was the painting we were to recreate:
The instructor, David, was awesome! He took us through the painting step-by-step showing and telling us what to do along the way.
David kept reminding us that we could really do whatever we wanted though, because at the end of the night- this was our painting to take home.
I really have NO painting background- but it was really fun!
It was also fun to watch everyone’s paintings come to life.
Here’s the progression of mine:
And the final product:
Heather and I with our masterpieces:
Not too shabby!
This was such a fun night and I will definitely be doing it again in the future. A big thanks to Heather for inviting me to go along!
Have a great weekend- look out for some big changes on the blog next week!!
Have you ever participated in a class like this? Do you consider yourself artistic?
