Now that we’re a few days into 2013, how are you feeling? Are you motivated? Optimistic? Excited about the year ahead?
If you’re like the majority of Americans, you may have made a New Year’s resolution to get healthier- whether that means eating better, exercising or both. I definitely applaud anyone that resolves to make healthy changes in their life by adopting a lifestyle the includes fitness and good nutrition, and would never discourage anyone from doing so. That being said, having worked in the fitness industry for a number of years now, I’ve seen similar patterns each January. During the first few weeks after the new year, the gym is packed! I see lots of new faces, determined and motivated for this to finally be the year that they get healthy. Unfortunately, by the end of the month, about 90% of those faces disappear and I never see them again.
So what is it that keeps us “on the wagon” when it comes to our health? Why are so many people so motivated to start a healthy routine, only to let it slide after a few weeks? Why do some people stick to a healthy lifestyle while others fall back in to bad habits? The best answer that I can come up with is that it’s a combination of time management issues, boredom, lack of motivation and well… laziness. I know that “lazy” sounds harsh- and I don’t mean it to be that way. What I mean is that it’s HARD to stick to a healthy routine, and it takes a lot of work! Sometimes it just seems easier to skip the gym or get take-out for dinner. I know that a lot of people (myself included) also tend to throw in the towel after one slip-up. Everyone has slip-ups. Success comes from the ability to pick yourself up and get right back at it.
