Flashback: 2002

My first “blog” was a Livejournal, which I started near the end of my senior year of college (2002). Did anyone else have one of those?

It was basically a place for me to write random thing, and fill out LOTS of surveys. I was looking around at my Livejournal (which is still “live!”) and could not stop laughing at the things that I wrote about. Boy, has life changed a lot in 10 years. Just for fun, I’m pasting a survey below (and filling in commentary/updates) that I posted (almost exactly) 10 years ago! Just to catch you up to speed, I was 22, living in Baltimore, and about to graduate from UMBC with a degree in Graphic Design.

Here goes:

Four CDs from your collection that you will never get tired of:
Anything by – Radiohead
New Parade – The Sheila Divine
Whatever and ever amen – Ben Folds Five
Abbey Road – The Beatles

(Present day: I still agree- and haven’t gotten tired of any of them!)
Four places you just have to go:
Rome and Florence, Italy
Sydney, Australlia and the great barrier reef
Toledo and Barcelona, Spain
San Francisco

(Present day: San Francisco is the only place I’ve been to from that list (twice). I’d still like to visit the other three.)

Four things you’d like to learn:
use Flash
swing dance (better)
to speak spanish fluently
how to drive a stickshift

(Present day: I have not learned how to do any of those things. Wow- that’s bad!)

Four beverages you drink frequently:
Unsweetened Iced Tea
Diet Coke
Skim Milk

(Present day: The only thing I still drink regularly is water. I haven’t had a diet coke in about 4 years. And I’d swap the skim for almond milk.)

Four TV shows that were on when you were a kid:
The Cosby Show
Classic Concentration
You Can’t do that on Television
Salute your Shorts

(Present day: Obviously, that hasn’t changed…)
Four TV shows you watch now:
Six Feet Under
Will & Grace
Curb Your Enthusiasm

(Present day: Ahhh… I miss Six Feet Under. Best show ever! I do still watch Survivor- and I love it!)

Four places to go in your area:
930 club
The Brewers Art

(Present day: That list makes me miss living in Baltimore! And going to DC to see shows on a regular basis at 930 club. On a typical weekend, I’d either be at 9:30 club, or hanging out at Brewer’s Art in Baltimore and getting sushi at Kobe after the bars closed. Now I’m usually waking up at that time…)

Four things that never fail to cheer you up:
Alex, Jacob and Patrick
my dog
a Mike Taylor style joke (anything thats completely not PC)
dancing around singing Superdrag at the top of my lungs

(Present day: The three boys listed above are my friend Betsy’s kids, and I haven’t seen them in years. Gosh, they’re all grown up now! My DOGS still cheer me up. And I haven’t danced around to Superdrag in way too long.)

Four dream guys/girls:
Peter Krause
John Cusack
Jude Law
Zack Galifiganfogus (however you spell his name, the guy who hosted Late world with Zack)

(Present day: Peter Krause is still dreamy- but Paul Rudd is my #1 celebrity crush. And whoa- this was pre-Hangover… I thought Zack G was dreamy?!?!)

About 20 years ago:
I was 2 1/2 years old
My hair was so blonde it was almost white
My parents were married
My brother would tell me bad words and make me say them to my parents

(Present day: I was 12 1/2, my hair was curly and brown- I had a perm! My parents were NOT married, and my brother probably still tried to get me to curse.)

About 10 years ago:
I got my first kiss
I was in middle school
My dream was to be a photographer for National Geographic
My dad was dating a woman who was 22 (and is now my stepmom)

(Present day: I was a college graduate and just started substitute teaching- and was about to start a Master’s program in Art Education. I was about 50 lbs heavier than I am now, and HATED exercise. )

About 5 years ago:
I went to high school half day and college half day
I was obsessed with Reel Big Fish and the Bosstones
I went to Raves
I drove the “woody”

(Present day: Greg and I had been dating for about 6 months and were already living together. The Red Sox won the world series. I was already hating my teaching job, but LOVING exercise, and had lost those 50 lbs.)

Well, that was entertaining.

What were you doing 5, 10 or 20 years ago? Did you have a Livejournal?

  1. Oh my! This is AWESOME! I think I had a livejournal and Xanga (?) and I guess it is possible that they’re live but I don’t remember them and honestly they’d probably be a bit scary. haha

  2. What fun! I had the same aspirations to learn how to swing dance! Too bad I never followed through on that either. I never had a livejournal, but looks like it was pretty cool. I may have actually took time to journal if I had had one.

  3. oh man. i love this. i tried to go back into my yahoo e-mail but alas, those surveys are all gone.

  4. Peter Krause is still good looking but he was way better as Nate. I miss that show too. I kind of want to re-rent the entire thing on Netflix.

  5. Ha! This is way cool. I used to have a LiveJournal, but I think I’d be mortified to post *anything* I wrote on it back then! LOL

  6. Its like a digital time capsule—love! It weirds me out to think about the “5 years ago” category, because that time period sounds so short, and yet so much has changed!

  7. This is so fun!! I totally need to teach you to drive a stick shift! I could teach you in less than a day. You would love driving one.
10 years ago I was a senior in high school and my parents were about to get a divorce. 5 years ago, I was a senior in college about to marry my best friend!
Amazing how time goes by so fast!

  8. That’s hilarious!! I never had LiveJournal, but we did post stuff like that on MySpace. 5 & 10 years ago, I was just graduating from high school and college… totally different worlds!!!!

  9. Oh my gosh! Thats so awesome!

I never had LiveJournal, but I’ve thought about stuff like this. 5 years ago I was finishing college. 10 years ago I was about to graduate high school! Wow!

  10. I can teach you to drive stick in May :)

  11. love it!! I don’t know how to drive a stickshift either (DOH!)…but sometimes have nightmares where I must escape from bad guys in a stickshift car and somehow miraculously figure it out on the fly. :)

  12. This post was awesome to read! I loved it so much. It made me smile.

We have similar music tastes! Radiohead and Benfolds <3. I saw ben play a 4 hour set once. One of the best shows. I've seen.
I love Paul Rudd too, ever since Clueless.

20 years ago – I was 5 – I was living in PA, broke my elbow, and got my first kiss in the dog house with the boy next door.
10 – i was 15 – wearing hot topic clothes and going to my first concert blink 182 and new found glory
5 years – 20 – I was a junior in college. I weighed my heaviest at 150 lbs and went to rome that year with school. I feel in love with cooking, but hated my body and my relationship with food.

  13. OMG I was the survey QUEEN back in the day! Haha I had Livejournal, xanga and a site called SitDiary that isnt around anymore. I would do anything to find my old ones! I think I will post this survey on my blog today :-)

  14. Late to this party (going back through my reader), but I was totally an LJ addict. In fact, my husband and I met on LJ. He saw a post of mine on a community, saw my profile picture, and decided to comment on my LJ. The rest is history. :) I still have a screenshot of the first thing he ever “said” to me.

If/when we get goats, we’re totally naming one of them Frank.

  15. This is AMAZING. I love that you were able to look back on it and laugh at the changes you’ve made (or at how some things will always stay the same). I definitely never could have predicted everything that would have happened to me 5, 10, or 20 years ago. It just goes to show that we just have to ‘wait and see’ despite our best plans or dreams. :)
